Event & Attractions

This is the main event of the year for the Vintage Aircraft Club (VAC) and it's easy to get to from Oxford.

The VAC knows that many people with an interest in machinery of one type are interested in all types so this event presents an opportunity to see all sorts in action. This ranges from stationary engines through bikes and cars to planes (of course!) There are also lots of stall holders selling all sorts of stuff.

In 2005 we saw the Replica of the Vickers Vimy bomber. It was huge! The original was the first plane to cross the Atlantic, flown by Alcock and Brown.

The VAC is particularly interested to attract younger people to see and enjoy the story of how man evolved machines to accomplish many tasks. Each piece of equipment has its own place in the history of transport, industry or agriculture. All in all a very good family day out.

Turweston airfield itself is of interest. It was home to Wellingtons, Mitchells and others during World War II and today has a good selection of light aircraft and associated facilities. It also boasts two rally stages.

This year the VAC celebrated a number of anniversaries both in aviation and on the ground.

2006 was particularly attractive due to the following:

1896 - 110th anniversary - All Daimlers
1931 - 75th anniversary - Jaguar SS
1961 - 45th anniversary - Jaguar E-Type
1986 - 20th anniversary - Jaguar XJ40
1996 - 10th anniversary - Jaguar XK8 / XKR

Turweston Airfield is just over the border into Buckinghamshire and so is quite local to most of us. It is just off the A43 about two miles East of Brackley and nine miles North of Bicester. Do not go to Turweston village!

From Junction 10 on the M40 follow the A43 North for about 6 miles to Brackley.

There are three roundabouts on the Brackley ring road. (The first has the A422 to Banbury and the second has the A422 to Buckingham.)

Stay on the A43 towards Northampton. DO NOT follow signs for Turweston village!

About 1.5 miles after the third roundabout take the right turning for Whitfield village and Turweston Airfield. Drive through Whitfield - the entrance to the airfield is 1 mile further on, on the RHS.
